Mexico evaluates stricter trade restrictions on China

Mexico is evaluating plans to impose stricter trade restrictions and anti-dumping measures on certain products from China and other nations. The Mexican Ministries of Economy and Finance are currently assessing which products, not currently covered by bilateral trade agreements, could face new or increased tariffs.

Steel and vehicles are identified as primary candidates for these potential measures. While the Ministry of Economy stated there is no concrete proposal currently in place, the agency is maintaining ongoing consultations with businesses and conducting case-by-case investigations into alleged dumping practices.

These potential actions align with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s efforts to protect domestic manufacturing and strengthen ties with Washington as she seeks a multi-year extension of the USMCA trade pact. This follows a January move where Mexico increased tariffs by up to 50% on approximately 1,500 product categories from countries without free trade agreements.
