Mexico expands agricultural training with pilot program in Hidalgo and 30 workshops in Mexico City
A collaboration between the Central Campesina Independiente (CCI) and the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo (UACh) is testing a double‑row sowing system and rolling‑irrigation on demonstration plots in Hidalgo's Tepetitlán municipality. The pilot aims to double maize yields per hectare, cut production costs by up to two thousand pesos per hectare, and introduce zero‑tillage practices.
In parallel, Mexico City’s Office of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched a 30‑workshop programme for its five Escuelas de Campo. The training, delivered jointly by SNICS, the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP), UACh, UNAM’s Facultad de Estudios Superiores Cuautitlánde, and other partners, covers sustainable pest management, soil recovery, value‑added processing of honey, milk and nopal, financial education, project administration and fire‑prevention. The workshops target producers in the capital’s boroughs of Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, La Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, Tláhuac, Tlalpan and Xochimilco, aiming to boost productivity, resilience and food sovereignty.
