Mexico agricultural training and technology expansion
Overview
In late July 2026, Mexico’s Secretariat of Rural Development (SDR) partnered with the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra) to launch a professionalisation school for agro‑industrial enterprises in Chihuahua. The eight‑module, 32‑hour programme, subsidised at 80% of tuition, runs from 18 August to 7 October across four sites and covers strategy, family business, innovation, legal and fiscal matters, finance and talent management, plus a virtual session on regulation and sustainability.
A few days later, the initiative broadened geographically and institutionally. A pilot project by the Central Campesina Independiente (CCI) and the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo (UACh) began testing a double‑row sowing system and rolling irrigation on demonstration plots in Hidalgo, targeting higher maize yields and lower production costs. Simultaneously, Mexico City’s Office of Agriculture and Rural Development rolled out a series of 30 workshops for its field schools, delivered jointly by SNICS, INIFAP, UACh, UNAM’s Facultad de Estudios Superiores Cuautitlánde and other partners, focusing on pest management, soil recovery, value‑added processing, financial education and fire‑prevention for producers across several city boroughs.
By August 2026, federal and state-level investments further expanded these modernization efforts. The Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development announced the opening of the ‘Elvia Carrillo Puerto’ National Training Center for the Transformation of the Mexican Countryside, which provides technical training, digital tools, and specialized education—including drone management—via a digital platform and virtual library. Additionally, in the State of Mexico, the ‘Transformando el Campo’ program invested over 62.8 million pesos to support prickly pear producers with specialized equipment such as cactus shredders and despinners.
