Mexico faces backlash over mandatory SIM-CURP registration

Mexico is facing widespread digital backlash following the implementation of a mandatory requirement to link mobile SIM cards with the Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP). The measure, part of the federal government's National Security Strategy, aims to reduce fraudulent calls and extortion.

Data from the DINAMIC platform indicates that between July 31 and August 28, 2026, the topic generated over 38 million impressions. The analysis suggests that 100% of the public digital conversation is characterized by suspicion, panic, and resistance. Key themes of opposition include civil disobedience and active boycotts (29%), as well as fears of mass surveillance and social control (22%).

While the federal government maintains that mobile operators are responsible for data custody, citizens have expressed significant concerns regarding legal vulnerability and the potential for large-scale data leaks.
