Mexico faces severe missing persons and crime crisis
Mexico is facing a severe crisis regarding missing persons and organized crime. Official figures indicate that between March 1964 and November 2022, 107,760 people were reported missing. Other reports suggest the number of recorded missing persons has exceeded 135,000.
Forensic services currently hold 72,000 unidentified bodies, and more than 5,600 clandestine graves have been uncovered in recent years. In the state of Jalisco, which reports the highest number of cases in the country, violence is driven by territorial disputes between the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation Cartels.
A prominent historical example of the country's instability is the 2014 Iguala case, where 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School were attacked by municipal police and criminal groups. Investigations later determined that local authorities and security forces were involved in the crime.
