Mexico braces for heavy rains and storms as monsoon and Tropical Wave 19 intensify

The Mexican National Weather Service forecasts widespread heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and strong winds across much of the country from July 17‑19, 2026. A combination of the summer monsoon, low‑pressure systems over the northern and southeastern interior, and the approaching Tropical Wave 19 – which may develop into a tropical cyclone off the Pacific coast of Jalisco and Colima – will drive intense rainfall in western states such as Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango and Nayarit, with additional strong showers in Sonora, Jalisco, Michoacán, Veracruz and others. Wind gusts of 30‑70 km/h are expected in Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas and other regions, while lightning and hail are possible nationwide. Temperatures will remain hot to very hot, especially in the northwest and Baja California. Authorities warn of flash flooding, landslides, reduced visibility from fog and possible damage to trees and structures.
