Mexico fishing industry faces regional crises in Sonora and Yucatán

The Mexican fishing industry is facing significant economic challenges across different regions. In Sonora, specifically in Guaymas and Empalme, coastal communities are experiencing a crisis following three consecutive seasons of low yields for squid, jellyfish, and blue crab. Gustavo Padilla Rodríguez, president of the Sociedad Cooperativa Pesquera 12 de Agosto, noted that changes in capture methods—requiring traps instead of nets for jellyfish—have reduced profitability and volume. Additionally, a lack of federal surveillance has led to concerns regarding the depletion of shrimp resources.

In Yucatán, the octopus fishing season has also seen a slow start, with initial catch volumes in Progreso and Tizimín falling below historical expectations. Enrique Sánchez Sánchez, president of Canainpesca in Yucatán, expressed optimism that volumes will improve as the season progresses, despite current uncertainty regarding authorized catch quotas. Both regions emphasize the need for increased maritime surveillance to ensure resource sustainability and protect legal fishing activities.
