Mexico gender parity: Women hold 29.8% of municipal posts

Federal Deputy Blanca Araceli Narro Panameño reported that women secured only 29.8 percent of the 1,794 municipal presidencies and mayoralties contested in Mexico during 2024. While the country has achieved parity in Congress and elected its first female president, Narro noted that reaching 50 percent representation at the local level remains a pending goal.

Narro highlighted recent constitutional and legal reforms approved between September 2024 and April 2026. These changes address substantive equality, inclusive language, parity in the Judiciary, and femicide. The reforms mandate that the State guarantee a life free of violence for women and require security institutions to act with a gender perspective, including the establishment of specialized prosecutor's offices for gender-based violence.

In terms of labor, Narro stated that prior to recent modifications, women earned 14 percent less than men for the same work. She also noted that 6.6 million women were lifted out of poverty between 2018 and 2024, contributing to a reduction in the gender wage gap across various sectors.
