Gender parity and equality initiatives in Mexico
Overview
In Mexico, efforts to achieve gender parity and equality are being addressed through legislative reform and administrative training. Federal Deputy Blanca Araceli Narro Panameño reported that while Mexico has achieved parity in Congress and elected its first female president, women held only 29.8 percent of the 1,794 municipal presidencies and mayoralties contested in 2024.
Recent constitutional and legal reforms approved between September 2024 and April 2026 have focused on substantive equality, inclusive language, parity in the Judiciary, and addressing femicide. These reforms mandate that the State guarantee a life free of violence for women and require security institutions to operate with a gender perspective.
At the regional level, the Government of the State of Mexico has implemented training programs to integrate a gender perspective into public administration and budgeting. Facilitated by the Secretariat of Women (SeMujeres), these sessions have trained 225 public servants to ensure financial allocations help reduce inequality gaps and support female economic autonomy.
