Mexico government excludes print and social media from new audience rights rules

The Mexican federal government has stated it has no current intention to extend new audience rights guidelines to the print press or social media. Luisa María Alcalde, the Legal Counsel to the Federal Executive, clarified that the draft regulations currently under public consultation by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) are specifically aimed at radio and television.

Alcalde explained that these guidelines, derived from a 2025 law, focus on broadcast media because there is a higher risk of audiences confusing news content, opinions, and advertising in those formats. She noted that in print media, it is significantly easier for readers to distinguish between news, opinion pieces, and advertisements.

During a conference regarding the right of reply, Alcalde mentioned that the industry itself has issued communications clarifying that there was never an intention to regulate print media and that dialogue with concessionaires remains open.
