Mexico-Guatemala Earthquake of Magnitude 5.4 Shakes Southern Mexico and Western Guatemala

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck southern Mexico on July 13, 2026, with its epicenter 64 km southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo in Chiapas. The National Seismological Service reported a depth of 44.2 km and, after assessment, authorities confirmed no fatalities, injuries or material damage, and ruled out any tsunami threat.

An adjacent magnitude 5.4 tremor, whose epicentre was off the Pacific coast of Mexico, was felt across western Guatemala. Residents of San Marcos, Malacatán and nearby departments reported stronger shaking due to a local "site effect", where softer soils amplify seismic waves. Seismologists explained that intensity levels can be higher in areas farther from the epicentre when ground conditions differ. No casualties were reported in Guatemala, and civil protection agencies in both nations activated monitoring protocols.
