Mexico healthcare crisis and Central American digital rights updates

Mexico is facing a healthcare crisis characterized by structural failures and a lack of compliance with constitutional mandates regarding the right to health. Medical, nursing, and unionized personnel, particularly from the IMSS, have engaged in protests and labor strikes since October 2026. Key grievances include chronic shortages of medicines, medical supplies, serums, and oxygen, as well as insufficient wages, poor working conditions, and a lack of specialized personnel and infrastructure.

In Central America, there is an ongoing effort to establish robust legal frameworks for digital rights and privacy. An investigation by Fundación Acceso examines the regulation of information technologies across Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. In Guatemala, the Congress has moved to a second debate on Initiative 6103, the Integral Law for the Protection of Personal Data Held by Third Parties, which aims to safeguard citizen privacy in the digital sphere.
