Mexico high-tech exports surpass transport sector
Mexico's high-technology sector has become a primary driver of the national economy, with computer equipment and electronics exports reaching $120.54 billion in the second half of 2026. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), this figure has surpassed the transport equipment manufacturing subsector, which historically led the country's export balance.
Regional shifts are evident, particularly in Jalisco, which saw a 130% annual growth in external sales driven largely by electronics. In the semiconductor field, 70% of companies involved in design are located in the region. However, challenges remain regarding the integration of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into these high-tech and AI production chains. In Nuevo León, studies indicate that only 3% of SMEs have integrated technology to improve their processes.
Globally, the robotics and physical AI sector is also seeing massive investment, raising $33.4 billion in the first half of 2026. While hardware manufacturing costs have decreased, scaling physical production and replicating human dexterity remain significant technical and economic hurdles.
