Cargo train derails on Mexico's Interoceanic Corridor in Oaxaca, no injuries

A freight train on the Interoceanic Corridor of the Istmo de Tehuantepec derailed on the night of 14 July 2026 near the communities of Nizanda and Chivela in the municipality of Asunción Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca (kilometre‑point PK‑230+800 on Line Z). The incident involved two articulated cargo units; locomotives and wagons were removed safely and no people were injured or killed.

The derailment occurred in the same section where a passenger‑train crash in December 2025 claimed 14 lives and injured dozens. Authorities activated standard safety protocols, began a technical review of the track, and reiterated that the earlier accident was linked to excessive speed. Federal officials have kept passenger service suspended while redesigning the “Las Orejas de Conejo” curve and overseeing the ongoing cargo operations that connect the ports of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos.
