Mexico implements mosquito control measures in Guerrero and Campeche

Health authorities in Mexico are implementing various strategies to combat mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. In Chilpancingo, Guerrero, the State Health Secretariat has begun preventive nebulization in “red zones” or “hot blocks” after detecting an increased presence of Aedes Aegypti eggs. Alondra García Carbajal, head of the department, noted that while Guerrero has recorded 21 confirmed cases—the lowest in three years—preventive measures remain essential to avoid a resurgence.

In Campeche, health officials are preparing to launch a biological control program using Wolbachia bacteria starting in November. According to Health Secretary Orlando Alvarado, this method involves infecting mosquitoes with the bacteria to neutralize their ability to transmit viruses. This biological approach is intended to complement current massive fumigation efforts used to manage mosquito populations during the rainy season. Additionally, specialized health centers in Carmen and Campeche are set to receive unprecedented funding for the modernization and rehabilitation of facilities dedicated to HIV and sexually transmitted infections.
