Mexico mosquito and screwworm control efforts

Overview

By late September 2026, the cattle screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) outbreak in Mexico has escalated into a significant human health crisis. Human infections have quintupled compared to 2025, with 575 cases recorded in 2026 alone across 27 states. These infections have resulted in four deaths in Oaxaca, Querétaro, Veracruz, and Yucatán, with Chiapas and Veracruz reporting the highest caseloads.

The pest continues to impact livestock and wildlife; Sonora has reported 69 active cases across 11 municipalities. In response, the Museo del Desierto in Coahuila has implemented fly traps and medical protocols, while veterinary teams have been deployed to El Fuerte, Sinaloa, to assist producers.

Concurrently, dengue fever is seeing a surge in Campeche, Mexico. The state has confirmed 42 cases in 2026, doubling the 21 cases reported during the same period in 2025. Notably, 24 of these cases are classified as dengue with warning signs or severe dengue, with the municipality of Carmen identified as a primary hotspot. This follows a broader regional trend, as the Pan American Health Organization reported over 1.6 million suspected dengue cases across the Americas through late August 2026.
