Mexico increases diesel subsidies as Banxico rate decision looms

In Mexico, the government has increased the complementary diesel subsidy to $1.84 per liter for the week of September 19–25, 2026. This follows a decision by the Ministry of Finance to maintain the IEPS tax at zero for diesel, resulting in a total government payment of $9.20 per liter to offset costs.

In the financial sector, market attention is focused on the upcoming Banco de México (Banxico) meeting on September 24. Analysts are debating whether the central bank will maintain interest rates at 6.50% or raise them to 6.75% to protect the interest rate differential with the U.S. Federal Reserve. The Mexican peso showed slight gains at the start of the week, trading near 17.19 to 17.24 pesos per dollar.
