Mexico infrastructure and traffic issues drive economic losses

Infrastructure deterioration and road closures in Mexico are causing significant economic and logistical disruptions. In the State of Mexico, fuel distributors in the Toluca Valley report that poor road conditions and frequent closures have extended transport times from eight hours to as many as 16 hours. Jorge Luis Pedraza Navarrete, president of the Association of Gasoline and Lubricant Distributors (ADIGAL), noted that these delays have increased operational costs by approximately 30 cents per liter.

In the Mexico City Metropolitan Area, traffic congestion is resulting in massive annual economic losses. Economist César Velázquez calculated that reducing daily travel time by just one minute per trip could recover approximately 4.5 billion pesos annually. The study highlights that while average commutes last between 40 and 45 minutes, residents in peripheral areas often spend up to four hours daily commuting, a burden exacerbated by accidents, roadworks, and demonstrations.
