Mexico transportation and infrastructure challenges
Overview
Commuting patterns and infrastructure challenges in Mexico are creating significant financial and logistical burdens. Data indicates that 12.34% of Mexican workers commute outside their home municipality, with the highest concentrations in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, where more than one in three workers travel between municipalities. Other states with significant patterns include Nuevo León, Jalisco, Tlaxcala, and Querétaro.
In the State of Mexico, rising transportation costs following late 2025 fare adjustments have left some residents reporting that daily transit expenses can consume up to half of their weekly income. These issues are compounded by deteriorating infrastructure. In the Toluca Valley, poor road conditions and closures have doubled transport times for fuel distributors, increasing operational costs by approximately 30 cents per liter.
A study by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) reveals that traffic congestion across 44 metropolitan areas costs 203.3 billion pesos annually. In the Mexico City metropolitan area alone, congestion costs 81,747 million pesos per year—roughly 2.7 times the budget of the local Secretariat of Citizen Security. Mexico City experiences the highest per capita cost at 10,721 pesos and the greatest time loss at 211 hours per year. Notably, public transport users bear a disproportionate burden, losing 247 hours per capita compared to 163 hours for private vehicle users.
While most regions struggle, Saltillo has seen a reduction in time lost to traffic, with annual time lost per person decreasing by 27.4 percent since 2019 due to local mobility initiatives.
