Taco Bell lettuce linked to US cyclospora outbreak from Mexican supplier

U.S. health agencies have traced a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis – a diarrheal disease caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis – to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms from central Mexico. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified the lettuce as the source for cases in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. More than 1,640 infections and 94 hospitalizations have been confirmed, with total U.S. cases approaching 7,000.

Taco Bell announced it is voluntarily removing the implicated lettuce from all its restaurants and will replace it within 24 hours in the affected states. Taylor Farms is pulling all iceberg lettuce sourced from Mexico from the U.S. market. The CDC warned consumers not to eat shredded lettuce from Taco Bell in the five states, while the FDA continues the traceback investigation. Mexico’s health ministry issued a travel advisory for U.S. visitors, urging hygiene precautions.

The outbreak has prompted heightened inspections at the U.S.-Mexico border and ongoing surveillance by federal, state and local health officials.
