Mexico journalist Alejandro Leyva murdered, seventh press killing this year

Alejandro Leyva, a 60‑year‑old journalist and regional TV director in Oaxaca, was shot three times in the head while eating at a street stall in San Pablo Etla and died on the scene. His killing is the seventh journalist murder in Mexico in 2024 and the fifth since June, echoing the country's darkest years for press safety.

Authorities say the case is under investigation, and President Claudia Sheinbaum ordered her cabinet to take up the matter. Press‑freedom group Article 19, represented by Mariana Suárez, warned that the pattern of impunity – with all victims previously threatened for exposing corruption and organized‑crime links – sends a message that attacks on journalists go unpunished.
