Oaxaca Journalist Alejandro Leyva Murder Triggers Media Front for Press Freedom
Journalist Alejandro Leyva was shot dead on 22 July 2026 while having breakfast in San Pablo Etla, Oaxaca. Two assailants on a motorcycle fired three shots to his head, killing the 60‑year‑old former director of the Oaxaca Radio and Television Corporation and columnist. Leyva’s death is the seventh journalist killing in Mexico in 2026, highlighting a pattern of impunity that rights groups say threatens press freedom.
In response, a coalition of Oaxaca media organisations—including the National Journalists Forum (Oaxaca chapter), the Association of Journalists of Oaxaca, the National Media Union, Movimiento Periodismo en Riesgo and independent reporters—agreed to form a common front. The front’s agenda calls for a full investigation of Leyva’s homicide, demands respect for freedom of expression, and rejects any attempts to divide the journalistic community. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her cabinet would take up the case, while the journalist‑rights group Article 19 warned that impunity sends a message that attacks on the press will go unpunished.
