Overview

The wave of journalist killings that began after Governor Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024 has persisted into late 2026. A Reporters Sin Fronteras briefing on 25 July confirmed at least seven journalists killed in the first seven months of 2026, bringing the total under Sheinbaum’s administration to 14 – the highest level since 2011‑12 and comparable to the Peña Nieto era. The latest victims include Alejandro Leyva, a regional TV director shot dead on 22 July while eating at a street stall in San Pablo Etla, Oaxaca, and Roxana Guzmán, whose disappearance and death in Veracruz prompted the detention of several local police officers for alleged collusion.

Families of the slain have intensified calls for investigations. Leyva’s relatives say Governor Salomón Jara Cruz has not contacted them, while Guzmán’s relatives demand accountability for the police involvement. Federal authorities have placed protective measures around journalist Pedro Matías Arrazola, who reported threats after Leyva’s killing.

President Sheinbaum ordered her cabinet to address the Leyva case, and press‑freedom group Article 19 warned that the pattern of impunity – with all recent victims having been threatened for reporting on crime, corruption or politics – underscores a systemic failure to protect media workers.
