Mexico labor authorities increase focus on worker rights and inspections
The Mexico City Congress has called for the protection of labor rights for digital platform workers, including guaranteed payments, recorded working hours, and access to social security. A recently approved agreement directs labor secretariats to strengthen inspections to ensure employers are meeting their obligations. Data indicates that while there are over 1.5 million platform workers in Mexico, only approximately 247,900 meet the income threshold required for comprehensive social security coverage.
In a related development, COPARMEX Metropolitano has urged businesses to strictly comply with the Federal Labor Law following an increase in the budget for labor inspections by the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS). The business group warned that companies failing to comply could face significant fines. Key challenges identified for employers include implementing recent labor reforms, managing the reduction of the workweek, and formalizing internal work regulations to avoid legal risks.
