Mexico labor market shifts toward independent work and skill upskilling

The Mexican labor market is undergoing a significant transformation driven by the rise of independent work and technological advancement. According to data from the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE), there are approximately 15.7 million independent workers in Mexico. To address the lack of professional infrastructure for this group, the startup LOIALT is developing a digital ecosystem designed to manage projects, protect payments, generate contracts, and build verifiable professional reputations.

Simultaneously, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) reports that by 2030, 54 out of every 100 Mexican workers will need to update their skills or undergo retraining. This shift is influenced by global trends identified by the World Economic Forum, which predicts that 22 percent of jobs will change by 2030. In Mexico, 95 percent of organizations anticipate that artificial intelligence will modify their operations, increasing the demand for human-centric skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability. This evolution is driving a move toward flexible education models, evidenced by a 356 percent increase in generative AI course enrollments on platforms like Coursera during 2025.
