The Mexican labor market is undergoing a significant transformation driven by technological advancement, automation, and the rise of independent work. The Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) reports that by 2030, 54 out of every 100 Mexican workers will need to update their skills or undergo retraining. This is fueled by the fact that 95 percent of organizations anticipate artificial intelligence will modify their operations, necessitating human-centric skills like critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability. This shift is reflected in a 356 percent increase in generative AI course enrollments on platforms like Coursera during 2025.

The freelance economy, comprising approximately 15.7 million independent workers, is driving demand for new digital infrastructures. For instance, the startup LOIALT is developing a digital ecosystem to manage projects, protect payments, and build verifiable professional reputations.

In the industrial sector, automation is reshaping the landscape, particularly in the automotive industry. While vehicle production volumes decreased by 0.9 percent between January and July 2026 compared to the previous year, the average number of employees fell by 5.5 percent. Despite this reduction in workforce, the stock of industrial robots in the automotive sector rose by approximately 42 percent between 2020 and 2025. This increased robot density has led to a 34 percent growth in industrial space occupied per worker, suggesting that automation is driving higher demand for industrial real estate even as labor requirements diminish.
