Mexico lacks national student learning assessments as school year ends

Researchers warned that Mexico will close the 2025‑2026 school year without any national assessment to measure how millions of students are performing in reading, mathematics or critical thinking. Patricia Ganem Alarcón of Educación con Rumbo said the absence of a nationwide test hampers policy decisions, resource allocation and the ability to track post‑pandemic learning gaps.

At the same time, the regional education authority in Nuevo Laredo announced that more than 79,000 students in special education, preschool, primary and secondary will begin their summer break on Friday, July 10, ahead of the official end‑of‑year date. Schools will finish academic activities, while teachers remain for administrative duties and a final technical council meeting.

The lack of comprehensive data and the routine school‑calendar transition highlight ongoing challenges for Mexico’s education system as it seeks to address learning deficits and monitor enrolment and dropout rates.
