Mexico 2026–27 school calendar and scholarship rollout
Overview
The SEP has confirmed the national 2026–27 school calendar, with classes for preschool, primary, and secondary levels beginning 31 August 2026 and ending 9 July 2027. The cycle includes 185 effective school days. Following a summer recess that began early due to extreme heat waves, the official schedule incorporates several key holidays, including Independence Day (16 September 2026), Day of the Dead (2 November 2026), and the Mexican Revolution commemoration (16 November 2026). Other observed dates include Constitution Day (1 February 2027), the Birth of Benito Juárez (15 March 2027), and the Battle of Puebla (5 May 2027).
Winter vacations are scheduled from 21 December 2026 to 5 or 7 January 2027, while spring break runs from 22 March to 2 or 5 April 2027. Additionally, classes will be suspended on the last Friday of every month for School Technical Council (CTE) sessions.
In Oaxaca, classes are set to begin earlier on 24 August 2026 due to local agreements with the CNTE union. To assist with organization, a specialized version of the calendar has been released for teachers and families in a printable PDF format to facilitate monthly planning.
In response to the upcoming academic year, SEP Secretary Mario Delgado Carrillo issued strict directives for Normal education institutions to prevent “novatadas” (hazing) and any form of violence, discrimination, or degradation during the pre-academic planning period from 17–28 August 2026. To mitigate inflation, the SEP has released guidelines stating that no teacher or administrator may require specific brands that place “undue financial pressure on parents.” Regarding financial support, the federal government announced a disbursement schedule for the Beca Rita Cetina, a 2,500-peso annual scholarship for primary students, with payments occurring between 3 August and 14 August 2026 via Banco del Bienestar.
