Mexico's Morena party dismisses proposed beer and sodium tax hikes
Legislators in Mexico's Chamber of Deputies have proposed increasing the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) on beer and products with high sodium content, such as instant soups and snacks. The proposal, presented by Deputy Vanessa López Carrillo, suggests an increase of between 60 cents and one peso per beer to generate approximately 6.5 billion pesos in additional revenue. The argument for the adjustment is based on the current tax asymmetry, noting that beer accounts for 93.1% of alcohol volume but only 63.3% of IEPS revenue.
However, the Morena party caucus has since dismissed these reports as “mere speculation.” Ricardo Monreal, the Morena coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, stated that there is currently no concrete proposal from the Executive branch to increase taxes on these items. Monreal emphasized that the priority should be combating tax evasion and avoidance by large companies rather than increasing the tax burden on families. He advised legislators to wait for the formal presentation of the 2027 Economic Package by the Executive branch on September 8 before discussing potential fiscal changes.
