Morena legislators request leave to run for 2027 Mexican governorships

The Permanent Commission of the Mexican Congress has approved leave requests from eleven federal legislators – seven senators and four deputies – belonging to the ruling Morena party and its ally the Ecologist Green Party (PVEM). The legislators are seeking to compete in internal Morena processes that will select candidates for the seventeen state governorships up for election in 2027. Approved licences will take effect between 15 June and 22 June 2026 and are generally granted for an indefinite period.

Among those granted leave are senators Félix Salgado Macedonio (Guerrero), Jasmine Bugarín (Nayarit), Waldo Fernández González (Nuevo León), Beatriz Mojica Morga (Guerrero), Lorenia Valles Sampedro (Sonora), Raúl Morón Orozco (Michoacán) and Imelda Castro Castro (Sinaloa). Deputies Graciela Domínguez Nava (Sinaloa) and Raymundo Vázquez Conchas (Tlaxcala) also received licences. Additional requests are expected from legislators such as Ana Lilia Rivera (Tlaxcala) and Ruth González (San Luis Potosí). The internal registration for Morena candidates begins on 22 June and closes on 27 June, covering states including Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Sinaloa, Tlaxcala and Zacatecas.

Party leaders have stressed that legislators must avoid premature campaign activities, citing legal frameworks that govern the process. The wave of licences reflects an early start to the intra‑party contests that will shape the next cohort of state governors.
