Mexico media regulation sparks debate over censorship risks

Legal experts and specialists are debating new regulations regarding audience rights in Mexico, raising concerns over potential government censorship and political control of media content. The proposed guidelines aim to protect fundamental audience rights through ethical codes, independent media defenders, and clear distinctions between news, opinion, and advertising. They also seek to ensure the right to reply, plurality, and accessibility for people with disabilities.

However, during a forum organized by the Barra Mexicana, Colegio de Abogados, Capítulo Quintana Roo, participants warned that the state must not become an arbiter of truth. There is a persistent tension between protecting audience rights and the risk of state-driven control over media discourse. The regulations, which have faced various constitutional challenges since 2016, are currently undergoing a public consultation process coordinated by the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT) through August 21, 2026.
