Mexico City officials prioritize euthanasia debate after patient march

Patients with incurable illnesses and their families led the first march for the legalization of euthanasia in Mexico City. The demonstrators marched from Bellas Artes through the Historic Center to demand the recognition of the right to a dignified death.

Central to the movement is the ‘Ley Trasciende’ initiative, championed by activist and terminal patient Samara Martínez. The proposal seeks to decriminalize and regulate medical assistance in dying for individuals with advanced chronic-degenerative or terminal conditions, provided there is free and informed consent. The initiative is supported by over 180,000 signatures.

Following the march, Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada met with representatives and expressed support for prioritizing the debate on the law during the current legislative period. Local legislators have also received the proposal for analysis. While Mexican law currently allows for advance directives to refuse life-prolonging treatments, active euthanasia remains prohibited under the current legal framework.
