Mexico moves judicial election to June 2028

The Veracruz state congress approved a constitutional reform that postpones the next judicial election from 2027 to the first Sunday of June 2028. The change aims to separate the judicial vote from the federal electoral calendar, streamline the process, and create a Coordinating Commission and new evaluation committees to manage candidate selection and reduce the workload of the Supreme Court.

Legal expert Leonardo Abarca Jiménez warned that the date shift is a political maneuver to strengthen the ruling party’s control over the judiciary. He argued that the additional year gives the party time to position its preferred candidates, tighten filters, and consolidate influence over the Supreme Court and disciplinary bodies, rather than merely improving the election’s logistics.
