Mexico moves to overhaul AI regulation after federal and state initiatives

Ricardo Monreal Ávila, coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, said the upcoming ordinary legislative period beginning 1 September will prioritize a legal framework for artificial intelligence, alongside reforms in health, anti‑corruption, digital rights and insurance regulation. He also ruled out any inheritance tax and outlined plans for the 2027 Economic Package.

In the state of San Luis Potosí, Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona announced the complete repeal of the controversial Ley Serrano and pledged to draft a new AI law after holding public forums. He emphasized that human dignity must prevail, that the law will protect journalists and influencers, and that it will not regulate media outlets. The new legislation will address misuse of images and voices and combat fake media sites.
