Mexico moves to unify healthcare services under Universal Health Service

Mexico is undergoing a structural reform to create a Universal Health Service, aiming to unify the services of IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS-Bienestar under a national coordination scheme. The reform seeks to resolve historical fragmentation in the sanitary system by decoupling the right to healthcare from employment status.

Proponents of the consolidation argue that the measure will promote social equity through unified identification and rights portability, allowing any citizen to receive care at various public facilities. Additionally, the unification under the Secretariat of Health is intended to optimize infrastructure planning and consolidate medication purchases to eliminate operational duplicities.

However, critics and independent economic analysts raise concerns regarding the gap between legislative ideals and budgetary realities. There are warnings that implementing universalization without sufficient funding could threaten existing healthcare standards and fail to address the underlying financial requirements of the system.
