Mexico municipal council reforms trigger debate over new seats and electoral districts

In the state of Chihuahua, PRI state president Alejandro Domínguez said that only the city of Juárez has formally requested the direct election of councilors by territorial demarcation. He explained that the recent state electoral reform, which reduces the number of councilors and redesigns districts, makes such a change difficult and costly, and that other municipalities cannot adopt the same model.

Meanwhile, the Aguascalientes municipal council approved an increase in the number of councilors from 14 to 15, with a vote of 18 in favor. The Morena parliamentary group opposed the measure, labeling it an unnecessary bureaucratic expansion that would add salaries, benefits and operational costs, and noted the absence of a budget impact study.
