Gerardo Fernández Noroña faces opposition to Senate presidency re‑election

PAN Senate coordinator Ricardo Anaya said he opposes Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña’s attempt to secure a second term as president of Mexico’s Senate, arguing that his previous tenure was marked by partisan confrontation and a lack of impartiality. Anaya quoted the senator as having “never treated all legislators equally,” and noted that members of the PRI have also expressed resistance to a re‑election. The choice of the Senate’s next president will be settled ahead of the September 2026 legislative session as parties negotiate the composition of the new Mesa Directiva.

Separately, PAN state president Javier Luévano Núñez emphasized that no candidacy for upcoming elections is guaranteed. He said the party’s internal selection process will follow established rules, may use surveys, and has already attracted more than 100 prospective candidates. The party remains open to anyone meeting the legal requirements, including former office‑holders, while insisting on strict compliance with electoral norms.
