Mexico ratifies Roberto Lazzeri Montaño as ambassador to United States

Mexico's Congress ratified the appointment of Roberto Lazzeri Montaño as the country's extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the United States. The Permanent Commission approved the decree with 27 votes in favour and eight against, and Senate President Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez administered Lazzeri's oath of office.

Lawmakers highlighted the strategic importance of the Mexico‑US relationship, noting its impact on trade, migration, security, remittances and energy. Senator Alejandro Murat Hinojosa said the appointment is “particularly relevant for the national interest” given the bilateral agenda’s breadth. Opposition members raised concerns about Lazzeri’s lack of career‑diplomatic experience and alleged ties to controversial political currents.

Earlier, Deputy Pedro Vázquez González had announced a request for authorities to investigate alleged customs extortion, while also stating that no political obstacles were expected for Lazzeri’s confirmation. He affirmed confidence that the Senate would soon finalise the ratification.
