Mexico plans joint operation of AICM and AIFA airports

The Mexican government intends to meet rising air passenger demand through the joint operation of Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). Jesús Esteva Medina, Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport, stated that the combined capacity of these two hubs is essential to managing projected growth over the next 40 years.

Currently, the combined capacity of AICM and AIFA is 66 million passengers annually. While the canceled Texcoco airport project was designed to handle up to 120 million passengers in its second stage, the government maintains that the metropolitan airport system, including Toluca and Morelos, will secure the country's aviation future.

This strategy follows calls from the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) for clarity regarding which airport system will serve as the primary hub for projected traffic, which is expected to double within two decades.
