Mexico aviation infrastructure development
Overview
The Mexican government is implementing strategies to manage rising air passenger demand through the expansion of its aviation infrastructure. In early October, Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez announced plans for a new public Aeronautical University in Tecámac to support economic and industrial activities near the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA).
By late October, the Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport, Jesús Esteva Medina, stated that the government intends to utilize the joint operation of AICM and AIFA to meet projected growth. The current combined capacity of these two hubs is 66 million passengers annually. The government maintains that this metropolitan airport system, alongside airports in Toluca and Morelos, will secure the country’s aviation future, addressing calls from the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) for clarity on primary hub operations.
