Mexico platform workers see limited IMSS benefits

The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) recorded more than 1.4 million platform‑based drivers and couriers registered for emergency medical care, yet only about 14 % (roughly 237,600 people) have full coverage that includes all statutory benefits such as pensions and economic assistance. The reform, launched in July 2025, added 104,786 workers to the full‑coverage pool and raised the formalisation rate by four percentage points, but the majority remain limited to basic health emergencies.

The IMSS data shows a total of 1,663,147 platform workers with some IMSS access, of which 1,425,520 are currently active in the system without comprehensive protection. Union leader Sergio Guerrero noted that the recent increase reflects seasonal demand from sports events rather than a structural shift. Analysts say the modest rise in formal jobs signals progress compared with the pre‑reform situation, but the regulatory model still leaves most gig workers without a full social‑security safety net.
