Mexico police face accusations of abuse and drug-related arrests of minors

Residents of Chicxulub Pueblo in Yucatán have accused the municipal police of prepotent behavior, abuse of authority and unjustified detention of minors. Allegations include the unwarranted seizure of a high‑school student’s motorcycle for not wearing a helmet, injuries sustained while being dragged handcuffed, and a pattern of impunity protected by local PAN official Amílcar Abricel Reyes Marín.

In San Juan Cancuc, Chiapas, municipal officers detained three adolescents (aged 13, 14 and 17) after a citizen report. A search of their backpacks uncovered marijuana, cocaine and crystal. The youths claim they were forced by their father, Nicolás “N”, to distribute the drugs and have accused him of physical abuse. Authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the father for corruption of minors, abandonment and drug trafficking, while the teens remain under the care of the state DIF.

Both incidents highlight concerns over police conduct toward minors in Mexico and ongoing investigations into alleged wrongdoing.
