Mexico political parties prepare for 2027 gubernatorial elections
Political parties in Mexico are beginning to organize candidates for the 2027 gubernatorial elections. The Morena party has reportedly identified potential candidates for 17 states, while the PAN is also moving toward candidate selection.
In Michoacán, the PAN is considering Alfonso Martínez, the current mayor of Morelia. In Querétaro, Felipe Fernando Macías, the current mayor of the capital, is emerging as a leading figure. In Aguascalientes, Senator Juan Antonio Martín del Campo is a prominent contender for the 2027 term.
A significant legal hurdle has emerged following a constitutional reform to Article 62, promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The new law prohibits candidates for governor or president from holding dual nationality, asserting that leaders cannot be loyal to two countries simultaneously. This has created an eligibility challenge for Jazmine Bugarin, a potential Morena candidate for governor of Nayarit, who was born in Los Angeles, California.
