Mexico power outage crisis prompts CFE to compensate damaged appliances
Frequent blackouts across Mexico have exposed a deep electricity grid crisis. The transmission network is described as aged, over‑stretched and unable to cope with soaring demand during heat waves, leading to outages that can last from a few hours to several days. Small businesses such as shops, restaurants and workshops report losses of 2,000–40,000 pesos per event, while larger industrial users face inactivity costs of up to 1.5 million pesos per hour. Rural communities also suffer interruptions to water supply, cold‑chain medicines and communications.
The federal utility CFE denies a systemic failure but offers a free compensation procedure for customers whose appliances are damaged by voltage drops or outages. Claimants must contact CFE’s 24‑hour line (071), complete a request form, and provide identification, service data, a description of the incident and purchase receipts. A CFE technician conducts a technical assessment; if the report confirms damage caused by the outage, the utility may indemnify or repair the equipment.
