Mexico CFE power outage crisis expands
Entities: Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) · Cabo San Lucas · Juan Novelo Zapata · Emilia Calleja Alor · Villas del Sol
Overview
Following weeks of blackouts across central and southern Mexico, CFE announced a nationwide preventive‑maintenance and outage‑response programme. The utility reported the grid remains stable, with 62,712 MW installed capacity and a 14.8 % reserve margin as summer demand peaks. In Quintana Roo, CFE and the state signed a joint action plan for rural villages such as Bacalar, Othón P. Blanco and Limones, covering transformer balancing, tree trimming, meter checks and line cleaning. In Sonora, 21 medium‑voltage structures will be replaced, 150 trees trimmed, 30 arrester banks installed and 21.8 million pesos allocated from the Universal Energy Service Fund for 141 electrification projects in 13 municipalities. A new substation in Acuña is slated for construction in January 2027, and CFE clarified that no special “Casa por casa” inspection programme will be launched in 2026.
Outages continue to be reported in Cabo San Lucas and other regions, sustaining complaints from users in Sinaloa about bills reaching 90,000 pesos and raising concerns in Yucatán that the disruptions are feeding inflation. State officials in the State of Mexico have called for a restructuring of the regional electric system to mitigate industrial and commercial disruptions.
