Quintana Roo, Mexico faces record sargassum invasion harming tourism
NASA’s Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, Ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite recorded near‑record levels of seaweed in the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt in June 2026, making the year the second‑highest on record after 2025. The belt, a 5,500‑mile stretch from West Africa to the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, is estimated to contain about 5 million metric tons of sargassum, with concentrations soaring along Mexico’s Caribbean shoreline.
In the eastern state of Quintana Roo, officials expect 119 000–130 000 tons of sargassum to wash ashore by year‑end, surpassing the previous record of 96 000 tons. More than 130 000 tons have already been removed from beaches, yet only five beaches remained free of the algae as of 29 July 2026. President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to present the plan, while the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) has deployed over 500 personnel and reported collecting 79 900 tons by 8 July and 88 998 tons by the end of July. The strategy includes more sargaceros, containment barriers and projects to convert the harvested algae into energy and construction materials.
