Overview

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s two-stage, 2-billion-peso programme, launched in July 2026, expands across Quintana Roo’s five tourist corridors. By mid-August 2026, sargassum removal reached record levels, surpassing the previous state record of 92,783 tons. Total collection exceeded 106,000 metric tons, with officials projecting year-end totals could reach at least 130,000 tons. While recent weeks showed a 25 percent reduction in arrivals, total volumes remain at historic levels, with approximately 109,800 tons removed as of August 18.

Health risks are mounting; a UNAM study revealed that workers in areas like Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen are being exposed to hydrogen sulfide concentrations averaging 1.8 ppm and peaking at 50 ppm, exceeding the safe 8-hour limit of 1 ppm. This gas may also affect tourists and residents.

Economic and political tensions persist. In Cancun, hotel associations have rejected proposals to fund offshore collection, arguing jurisdiction belongs to the Mexican Navy. Meanwhile, Governor Mara Lezama is coordinating with the federal government, though local legislators are calling for oversight to ensure funds reach the southern coast, including Mahahual and Xcalak. By September, residents challenged official narratives, reporting foul odors, insect increases, and concerns that heavy machinery use is contributing to coastal erosion.
