Mexico‑Switzerland talks boost trade, investment as Sheinbaum meets Parmelin
President Claudia Sheinbaum received Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin at Mexico’s Palacio Nacional, marking the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The leaders announced the launch of formal talks to modernise the bilateral trade agreement within the EFTA framework and to deepen cooperation in science, innovation, education and environmental protection.
Bilateral trade reached US$4.272 billion in 2025, with Switzerland ranking as Mexico’s sixth‑largest foreign investor, having injected about US$2.3 billion and operating roughly 220 firms that employ over 52 000 people. Both sides highlighted confidence from Swiss business delegations and outlined measures to streamline procedures and support the “Plan México”. Cultural cooperation was also underscored, noting the repatriation of 67 Mexican artefacts since 2018. Future projects include a Swiss‑backed clean‑energy innovation centre in Querétaro slated for 2027.
The two governments reaffirmed shared values on multilateralism, peaceful dispute resolution and the fight against plastic pollution, signalling a broadening partnership beyond the North‑American market.
