Mexico President Sheinbaum Affirms T‑MEC Remains in Force Through 2036
President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters in Morelia that the United States‑Mexico‑Canada trade pact (T‑MEC) is not a result of a bad negotiation and will stay in effect for its current ten‑year term, with the option to extend it for another sixteen years. She said the first annual review is progressing well and highlighted the certainty it provides for both domestic and foreign investors, keeping the agreement active at least until 2036 despite the United States’ decision not to extend it now.
Sheinbaum emphasized that the treaty offers a stable environment for businesses in the IMMEX program and reaffirmed strong commercial relations with the United States. She noted that Canada remains a partner, even though it faces “greater disadvantages” than Mexico under current conditions. The president linked the trade discussion to broader efforts to support regional development, including a 4 billion‑peso investment in health and sports infrastructure in Michoacán.
