Mexico President Sheinbaum announces Teotihuacan upgrades after attack

President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted rehabilitation work at the Teotihuacan archaeological zone, two months after an armed attack on 20 April that left a Canadian tourist dead and 13 people wounded.

The upgrades include new access routes, improved signage, shaded walkways and the reopening of the on‑site museum, which had been closed for about two decades. About 37 million pesos were allocated for the improvements. Sheinbaum said, "Teotihuacan looks very beautiful now," emphasizing the enhanced visitor experience.

Sheinbaum noted that the measures are part of a broader strategy to improve safety and visitor services at major heritage sites ahead of the 2026 World Cup, citing similar rehabilitation projects at sites linked to the Tren Maya and visitor‑center networks in the southeast of the country.
