Mexico President Sheinbaum forecasts USMCA renewal for another 16 years

President Claudia Sheinbaum said the United States‑Mexico‑Canada trade pact (USMCA) will remain in force until 2036 and could be extended for a further 16 years if the three countries reach consensus. She emphasized the deep economic integration across North America and noted that a major review of the agreement will take place this year, with Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard already in the United States for new talks covering all 34 chapters.

Economist María del Carmen Corchado Reyes warned that lingering uncertainty over the pact could deter high‑technology investment in Mexico’s industrial hub of Aguascalientes. She highlighted the long lead‑times required for sectors such as electromobility, semiconductors and logistics, and urged a shift toward exporting Mexican firms rather than merely attracting foreign capital.
